| On the eastern
shores of Okanagan Lake you will find a wonderful community
surrounded by vineyards, orchards and the finest views
of the Valley. Naramata, BC was founded in 1907. It
was established as an agricultural area but quickly
became known as a cultural centre. People from all over
would arrive by boat for plays, concerts, operas and
regattas. In 1914 the Kettle Valley Railway was completed
and Naramata has new link to the rest of BC. The Kettle
Valley Railway construction through the Naramata area
was one of the most difficult due to the intense volume
of rock.
Naramata was founded by John
Moore Robinson. It is named after Naramattah, the wife
of the Sioux Indian Chief Big Moose and means the Smile
of the Manitou. John Robinson also founded the townships
of Summerland and Peachland.
When in Naramata you can explore
the many orchards, vineyards and even take a nice hiking
trip along the historic railway. If you are looking
for some more adventurous hiking there are trails up
the rugged mountain tops.
Okanagan Mountain Provincial
Park offers secluded bays and sandy campground. You
can take in the unspoiled habitat on bike, horseback
or on foot. The sunny beaches of Manitou Park are a
great place to spend the day swimming, boating, and
having a picnic. The Naramata Heritage Inn & Spa
is the perfect location to relax and unwind and if you
want to learn a little more about the area visit the
Naramata Heritage Museum. Home to many artists, the
local shops are a wonderful place to find local creations.
Since there is no road
access from the north, Naramata is visited only by those
who realize all it has to offer. Peace, serenity, golden
sunsets and beautiful views from all locations, Naramata
is truly a wonderful place to visit or call home.
